Scientific Facts
Obsidian is an igneous rock occurring as a natural glass formed by the rapid cooling of viscous lava from volcanoes. As silicate-rich magma extrudes from inside the earth’s crust, it falls over the water bodies or other surfaces that are in contact with water. As a result, the lava gets cooled and consolidated instantly without any crystallization. Hence, obsidian cannot be classified under any crystal system. This glassy rock is metastable—over time, it becomes fine-grained, mineral crystals. Obsidian is extremely rich in silica (about 65 to 80 percent), is low in water, and has a chemical composition similar to rhyolite. Obsidian has a glassy luster and is slightly harder than window glass.

Obsidian is said to be a strongly protective stone, even a shield against negativity, as well as a stone of purification. When it comes to purification, it is also said to draw out mental stress and tension while stimulating growth, urging exploration of the unknown and opening new horizons.
